Suction side cleaners attach to one of the suction ports in your pool – the plumbing that pulls water out of the pool to be filtered. Usually, this port is the skimmer, or your pool may have a separate vacuum port especially for a pool cleaner. With the hose attached and the filter pump running, suction is created on the underside of the cleaner. The cleaner moves around the pool while vacuuming dirt and debris through the hose and sending it to the pump strainer basket and filter…where it belongs. Dirt and debris are sucked up by the cleaner and then through the hose, past the suction port, through the pipe, and is trapped in the filter pump strainer basket.

Salt Water Systems require three things to properly function.

1. Salt. The swimming pool must have about 3500 parts per million of salt in the pool water. The salt makes the water conductive and facilitates the production of chlorine. (This amount of salt is relatively low, and in fact still qualifies as “freshwater” which means that your preexisting pool and pool equipment will most likely be able to integrate seamlessly should you choose to switch from traditional chlorine to a salt water system.)

2. Control Box. This regulates how much chlorine is produced.

3. Salt Cell. A series of plates that with opposite charges. As water passes through the plates electrolysis takes place and chlorine is released from the salt.

Although using a salt water system does require a change in the way you maintain your swimming pool, it may be worth looking in to, especially if you find your skin irritated by traditionally maintained pools.

Now, how do you tell if your pool has too much or too little calcium? The simplest way is to do a simple chemical test.  Or, you could do the lather/froth test.  Try taking a small amount of soap or toothpaste and lather it up in the water you would like to test.  If it lathers up easily, it is most likely soft water, if it doesn’t it’s probably hard water.

However, if your pool technician is doing his job weekly, you shouldn’t be having any issues!

Yes, being a pool owner can be confusing, but it is important to be aware of all factors that influence your pool’s water quality.  So let us first define what phosphate are.  Phosphates are microscopic dead plant material that basically act as food for algae, which you do not want in your pool.  Unfortunately, like many other things in nature, the presence of phosphates just cannot be helped.  The good news is, it can be controlled.  Almost everything has phosphates, including skin, leaves, dust….basically any organic material.  Anything that remains in the pool long enough to begin decomposing will produce phosphates.  So just imagine everything that is going on in your pool water when leaves and other debris fall and get left in your pool. Not only does your filter start to get clogged, but a buffet for algae begins to grow as well!  Thus, you can see how regular and professional pool servicing is a must.

Ideally, your pool service technician is coming once a week to clean out the skimmer and pool surface as well as check the water chemistry.  Generally he or she will recommend a phosphate removal right before the swim season is to start. This helps get the pool extra clean and in the ideal state as it prepares for much heavier usage.  However, if your pool is getting regular service, phosphates shouldn’t be too much of a worry!

Having the Appropriate Equipment for Your Pool or Spa

•Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.
•Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
•If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door alarms and always use them. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing pools or spas.
•Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water
•Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers, and ask your pool service provider if you do not know
•Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order
•Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm

Vinyl Liners: The best way to explain a vinyl pool is to compare it to an above ground pool (it’s just set in ground). Like with any pool, it all starts by digging a big hole in the ground. Then, a crew would assemble a metal frame around the perimeter of the whole and secure the bottom with sand. Finally, they attach a vinyl liner to the walls. This is the cheaper in ground pool option but it does typically need to be replaced every 7-10 years or so.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools are pools that are already preformed from a fiberglass composite material. In order to fit the structure, a construction crew would need to dig a whole that matches the shape and size of the fiberglass pool. After setting the necessary plumbing and piping, they drop the ready-made pool structure into the prepared hole. Once the pool is in, they finish it up by hooking up all the equipment and make sure all the electrical wiring is in place before finally adding a deck of some sort (usually concrete) and adding any finishing vanity touches.

Gunite/Shotcrete: This is the most popular type of pool but also the more expensive. It requires a construction crew to first excavate, then install the internal plumbing and a steel reinforced framework to form the shape of the pool. After that, a thick coat of gunite (or shotcrete) mix is sprayed on and around the steel bars, creating the pool shell. After tiles are set, the final phase is to put a smooth coating, better known as plaster, over the rough gunite shell. There are also various colors of pool plaster to create different looks for your pool.

All pools are an expensive and long-lasting investment. Make sure you take the right measures to protect your investments and keep your pool a great place for you and your family to enjoy.

Can’t find your smaller pool toys or goggles? Check your pool’s skimmer basket. Most often, leftover toys/equipment are swept into the basket along with debris.

Cleaning leaves from the swimming pool can be a chore. They clog most vacuums so you need to continually pull large leaves off the suction mechanism in order to keep the vacuum functioning properly. Leaves sit on the surface of the water for a relatively short period of time. Then they sink to the bottom where they will begin to decay.

If you have a large amount of leaves to deal with on a regular basis be sure that you have a pump and filtration system that can handle it. You may want to have more than one intake suction that will allow for at least a few strainer baskets. These need to be checked frequently to make sure that the leaves aren’t stuck or clogged in the basket.

Skimming leaves from the surface on a regular basis is the number one best way to keep leaves from becoming a problem in your pool. Use a high quality skimmer that has a large surface for skimming. Make a habit of skimming the pool completely before putting the cover on at night. Try to eliminate the leaves from the surface before they begin to deteriorate and head for the bottom. As leaves decompose they break into tiny pieces that will have to work their way through your filtration system.

You’ll also need to check and clean the baskets on a regular basis. These can become easily clogged with large leaves and can cause damage to your pump. When the baskets are clogged they are stopping the filtration system from working properly. If you have leaves you’ll need to check the baskets several times per day.

Your pool filtration and pump systems can only go so far in clearing leaves from the pool. Most leaves will need to be manually removed. To keep a clean, clear and algae free pool you’ll want to first consider placement of the pool in your yard. Avoid installing the pool directly underneath trees and consider wind direction when in close proximity to trees. If you must install your pool close to a tree you should remove any branches that directly overhang the swimming pool.

Sometimes, particularly in the fall, you can’t avoid being in the line of fire from many leaves. During these times be sure to use your pool cover any time you’re not in the swimming pool. This will help to eliminate a large quantity of leaves from getting in. Keep a small pan or bucket of water to rinse off feet before getting into the pool to reduce the leaves and other debris that gets tracked into the pool on wet feet.

Keep up with your pool maintenance by cleaning and replacing the filter often to avoid clogs. Cleaning leaves from the swimming pool requires a continued vigilance. If you take the necessary steps to keep your pool clean you’ll reap the rewards by having a sparkling clean pool to swim in.
