Total Dissolved Solids in your swimming pool can lead to all kinds of problems with your water, even if you are putting the perfect amount and ratio of pool chemicals into your pool. Total Dissolved Solids is the amount of solid material from debris, sweat, dissolved chemicals, dirt, and other contaminants that have saturated your water to an unsafe level.

If the TDS level is too high, your new pool chemicals you add on a weekly basis cannot dissolve and treat the water properly. This will lead to algae growth, cloudy water, irritated eyes and skin among other things.

The only solution to a high TDS level is to drain the pool and refill it with fresh water and new chemicals. Every pool should be drained at least once every 5-7 years. If you have lived in your home for 5 years and have NEVER drained your swimming pool, now is the time. Avoid costly summer chemical expenses while trying to combat pool problems that won’t go away without draining the pool.

Early spring is the best time to drain your pool because once the temperatures get too hot, we cannot drain a plaster pool or we risk the heat damaging the pool walls. Get your pool drained now so that it will be ready to go when it heats up.

Simple, yet highly effective cleaning

Suction side cleaners attach to one of the suction ports in your pool – the plumbing that pulls water out of the pool to be filtered. Usually, this port is the skimmer, or your pool may have a separate vacuum port especially for a pool cleaner. With the hose attached and the filter pump running, suction is created on the underside of the cleaner. If you’re considering getting a swimming pool or hut tub but worry about the effect the chlorine will have on your skin, you may want to look into an exciting option in pool maintenance that utilizes salt to help maintain a proper chemical balance in the swimming pool. The salt water method of swimming pool maintenance does not eliminate chlorine, however it uses salt to produce the chlorine, thus eliminating exposure to many other chemicals that are added to commercially produced chlorine.

Salt Water Systems require three things to properly function.

1. Salt. The swimming pool must have about 3500 parts per million of salt in the pool water. The salt makes the water conductive and facilitates the production of chlorine. (This amount of salt is relatively low, and in fact still qualifies as “freshwater†which means that your preexisting pool and pool equipment will most likely be able to integrate seamlessly should you choose to switch from traditional chlorine to a salt water system.)

2. Control Box. This regulates how much chlorine is produced.

3. Salt Cell. A series of plates that with opposite charges. As water passes through the plates electrolysis takes place and chlorine is released from the salt.

Although using a salt water system does require a change in the way you maintain your swimming pool, it may be worth looking in to, especially if you find your skin irritated by traditionally maintained pools.

We perform the following procedures at each regular service stop.

1. Vacuum, sweep and clean all pools, tile and related facilities as needed. Cleanse tile of dirt and leaves deposits.
2. Maintain proper records in accordance with the Ventura County Health Department regulations as to operation, pH level, services performed and chemicals uses.
3. The pumps, filters, disinfectant and chemical feeders, flow indicators, gauges and all related parts of the pool water purification system shall be kept in operational condition whenever the pool is available for use. The filters will be disassembled, the grids washed, the tanks cleaned and diatomaceous earth replaced every three months. The filters will be backwashed as needed. The chlorinator systems will be properly serviced as needed.
4. All equipment will be maintained in safe, clean and good operating condition. Repairs to equipment will be identified and estimates sent for approval prior to repairs performed.
5. Pool water shall be maintained at a Ph level of 7.2 to 7.8. Free chlorine residual must be maintained to at least 1.0 ppm. Cyanuric acid readings will not exceed 100 ppm and shall be tested at least once every three months. All levels will be tested and recorded during ordinary servicing.
6. Calcium hardness will be tested and recorded at least once every three months. If pool water exceeds 600 ppm, an estimate for drain will be submitted to the board for review.
7. Total dissolved solids will be tested at least once every three months. If pool/spa water exceeds 2000 ppm, an estimate for drain will be submitted for the board to review.
8. Pool will be closed for use for a minimum of four hours when water clarity or bacteriological count is exceeded.
9. The sides and bottom of pools and spa shall be kept free from slime and algae.
10. Water surface will be skimmed to remove floating debris during each ordinary service.
11. All strainer baskets around pool/spa and pump rooms will be cleaned during each ordinary service stop.
12. Pool equipment rooms shall be kept in a neat and sanitary condition at all times.
13. Contractor will furnish all chlorine, acid, DE and other chemicals. (charged per contract)
14. Contractor will furnish all additional chemicals, algaecides, dry chemicals, conditioner, foam down required for regular operation of the pool and spa. These chemicals will not be stored on premise.
15. A preventative maintenance program of inspection and equipment service will be conducted on each pool monthly.
16. Chemical feed systems will be refilled and adjusted as required during normal service stops.
17. Water level of pool/spa will be monitored to be at an optimal level. Auto-flow device should be present.
18. Circulation and other timers will be set as requested or required by law.
19. Gate closing locks and mechanism will be inspected on each stop and management notified if gates are in need of repair.
20. All proper emergency signage will be inspected and estimate sent when replacement required.
21. All submerged surfaces (walls, steps and spa) shall be brushed at each service stop.
22. Contractor will provide all necessary servicing and cleaning equipment and tools required for repairs and maintenance.

Hard water versus soft water, what’s the difference?  Should you care, does it matter?  Well, when it comes to the water in your pool, yes it does matter and you should care.  The difference between the two is that hard water contains the presence of minerals such as calcium or magnesium, and although not harmful, hard water may leave a slightly dry feeling on the skin compared to soft water.  What it means for your pool however, is something else all together. Water that contains little or no calcium can result in corrosive water, which can cause damage to the plaster, concrete and grout.  This type of damage can be expensive considering a new pool replaster can cost up to ***.  Fortunately, low calcium levels can be easily remedied by adding chemicals designed to do so.  On the other hand, high calcium levels can lead to scaling water, plugged filters, reduced circulation, cloudy water, even heater inefficiency, but can be easily fixed by adding fresh water with lower hardness.  An important thing to remember is that regardless of how perfect your pool’s calcium level is, there will still be some traces of calcium buildup around your tile line, it’s just a fact of life that cannot be helped.  

Now, how do you tell if your pool has too much or too little calcium? The simplest way is to do a simple chemical test.  Or, you could do the lather/froth test.  Try taking a small amount of soap or toothpaste and lather it up in the water you would like to test.  If it lathers up easily, it is most likely soft water, if it doesn’t it’s probably hard water.

However, if your pool technician is doing his job weekly, you shouldn’t be having any issues!

Phosphates. Huh? Phoswhats? 

Yes, being a pool owner can be confusing, but it is important to be aware of all factors that influence your pool’s water quality.  So let us first define what phosphate are.  Phosphates are microscopic dead plant material that basically act as food for algae, which you do not want in your pool.  Unfortunately, like many other things in nature, the presence of phosphates just cannot be helped.  The good news is, it can be controlled.  Almost everything has phosphates, including skin, leaves, dust….basically any organic material.  Anything that remains in the pool long enough to begin decomposing will produce phosphates.  So just imagine everything that is going on in your pool water when leaves and other debris fall and get left in your pool. Not only does your filter start to get clogged, but a buffet for algae begins to grow as well!  Thus, you can see how regular and professional pool servicing is a must.

Ideally, your pool service technician is coming once a week to clean out the skimmer and pool surface as well as check the water chemistry.  Generally he or she will recommend a phosphate removal right before the swim season is to start. This helps get the pool extra clean and in the ideal state as it prepares for much heavier usage.  However, if your pool is getting regular service, phosphates shouldn’t be too much of a worry!

A standard single speed pool filtration system operates on a time clock for approximately 8 hours/day. A 2 horsepower pump consumes approximately 1.5kw per hour. Assuming an electric rate of $0.10 per kWh, the following equation would apply: 8 hours X 1.5kw per hour X the rate of $0.10 per kWh = $1.20 per day. $1.20 per day X 30 days = $36.00 per month total.
A two-speed system can operate your pool’s filtration system 24-hours per day; 3 hours per day on high speed (2 horsepower) and 21 hours per day on low speed (1/3 horsepower) for about the same costs as the single speed system running 8 hours.

There are three main types of pool infrastructures: vinyl liner, fiberglass and gunite, and people always ask us, “What’s the difference??â€

Vinyl Liners: The best way to explain a vinyl pool is to compare it to an above ground pool (it’s just set in ground). Like with any pool, it all starts by digging a big hole in the ground. Then, a crew would assemble a metal frame around the perimeter of the whole and secure the bottom with sand. Finally, they attach a vinyl liner to the walls. This is the cheaper in ground pool option but it does typically need to be replaced every 7-10 years or so.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools are pools that are already preformed from a fiberglass composite material. In order to fit the structure, a construction crew would need to dig a whole that matches the shape and size of the fiberglass pool. After setting the necessary plumbing and piping, they drop the ready-made pool structure into the prepared hole. Once the pool is in, they finish it up by hooking up all the equipment and make sure all the electrical wiring is in place before finally adding a deck of some sort (usually concrete) and adding any finishing vanity touches.

Gunite/Shotcrete: This is the most popular type of pool but also the more expensive. It requires a construction crew to first excavate, then install the internal plumbing and a steel reinforced framework to form the shape of the pool. After that, a thick coat of gunite (or shotcrete) mix is sprayed on and around the steel bars, creating the pool shell. After tiles are set, the final phase is to put a smooth coating, better known as plaster, over the rough gunite shell. There are also various colors of pool plaster to create different looks for your pool.

Any person  who has, maintaines or manages a swimming pool knows that leaves and debris can keep it from looking clean and sparkling. Leaves are not only unattractive they also cause problems for your pool. There are three main problems that leaves can create in your swimming pool. First, leaves can clog the baskets and filters and cause your pump and filtration system to malfunction, overheat and/or seize up. Second leaves break down quickly in water and provide a source of food for bugs. Third, leaves contribute to algae growth in the pool.

Cleaning leaves from the swimming pool can be a chore. They clog most vacuums so you need to continually pull large leaves off the suction mechanism in order to keep the vacuum functioning properly. Leaves sit on the surface of the water for a relatively short period of time. Then they sink to the bottom where they will begin to decay.

If you have a large amount of leaves to deal with on a regular basis be sure that you have a pump and filtration system that can handle it. You may want to have more than one intake suction that will allow for at least a few strainer baskets. These need to be checked frequently to make sure that the leaves aren’t stuck or clogged in the basket.

Skimming leaves from the surface on a regular basis is the number one best way to keep leaves from becoming a problem in your pool. Use a high quality skimmer that has a large surface for skimming. Make a habit of skimming the pool completely before putting the cover on at night. Try to eliminate the leaves from the surface before they begin to deteriorate and head for the bottom. As leaves decompose they break into tiny pieces that will have to work their way through your filtration system.

You’ll also need to check and clean the baskets on a regular basis. These can become easily clogged with large leaves and can cause damage to your pump. When the baskets are clogged they are stopping the filtration system from working properly. If you have leaves you’ll need to check the baskets several times per day.

Your pool filtration and pump systems can only go so far in clearing leaves from the pool. Most leaves will need to be manually removed. To keep a clean, clear and algae free pool you’ll want to first consider placement of the pool in your yard. Avoid installing the pool directly underneath trees and consider wind direction when in close proximity to trees. If you must install your pool close to a tree you should remove any branches that directly overhang the swimming pool.

Sometimes, particularly in the fall, you can’t avoid being in the line of fire from many leaves. During these times be sure to use your pool cover any time you’re not in the swimming pool. This will help to eliminate a large quantity of leaves from getting in. Keep a small pan or bucket of water to rinse off feet before getting into the pool to reduce the leaves and other debris that gets tracked into the pool on wet feet.

Keep up with your pool maintenance by cleaning and replacing the filter often to avoid clogs. Cleaning leaves from the swimming pool requires a continued vigilance. If you take the necessary steps to keep your pool clean you’ll reap the rewards by having a sparkling clean pool to swim in.

To ensure a clean, clear swimming pool, our efforts are concentrated in two major areas: maintaining/adjusting the chemical balance of the pool water, and removing the unwanted dirt and foreign particles from the swimming pool.

The chemical balance of the swimming pool water cannot be maintained by adding pool chemicals when we remember to. We need to regularly test the pool water and adjust the levels, by adding pool chemicals, according to the results of the pool water tests.

In order to remove unwanted substances from the swimming pool, we rely on a water circulation and a filtration system. Regular brushing and vacuuming of our swimming pools ensures a minimum of foreign material in the pool water. Of course we also need to clean the filter itself and replace the fitration medium when necessary.

In order to determine how much of each chemical you might need to balance the pool water chemistry, we have provided some swimming pool calculators to take out the guess work.

A regular swimming pool maintenance programme can help to prevent swimming pool problems and avoid pool water problems. Prevention is better than cure, and much easier.
